Why Ban GMO Crops?

Irreversible Harm to the Environment of Humboldt County
Through cross-pollination, GMOs have the likelihood of contaminating crops and wildlife within the county, including but not limited to grapevines, organic crops, and trees. Pollen and seed from GMOs have been shown to travel great distances. Cross-pollination by GMO plants can cause the development of new weeds and may seriously disrupt ecosystems.

Irreversible Harm to the Economy
GMOs are a real threat to the organic growers, wine industry, and the fishing industry.

Wind- and insect-borne GMO pollen can cross-pollinate with natural crops, whether conventional or organic, and threaten the viability and livelihood of organic and conventional farmers. GMO pollution would make the produce unmarketable in the European Union and elsewhere. GMO salmon can have serious deformations and can also reduce the stock of natural salmon through their more vigorous mating.
The cultivation of GMOs threaten the livelihood of Humboldt County’s organic farmers.

Genetic Pollution of Private Properties
In some regions where nearby GMO crops are grown, wind drift has blown GMO pollen to organic farms, cross contaminating the resulting seeds and fruits. Also, GMO seed clinging to equipment and clothing has contaminated areas where these GMO seeds were never planted. Individual property owners who wish to keep their properties GMO-free, for whatever reasons, may be unable to do so.
